Tackling Dog Fouling in Blackpool

In May 2024, we teamed up with Blackpool Council and environmental service Enveco to tackle dog fouling in two areas of Blackpool, Louise Street, Middle Street, and Wood Park Gardens. This initiative came directly from feedback raised at a Blackpool Gateway2You session.

On the day, a member of the CGA Engagement Team, alongside Enveco, went door-to-door to speak with residents. They raised awareness about responsible dog ownership, explained how dog fouling can be reported via Blackpool City Council and handed out goody bags for dog owners. Each bag included dog poo bags, a bag dispenser, CGA responsible dog owner leaflets and materials from the ‘Bag It, Bin It’ campaign.

The aim of the action day was clear, to encourage responsible dog ownership, enhance the neighbourhood and reduce dog fouling.

The results speak for themselves. On 1st July 2025, a follow-up dog fouling count was carried out on the same streets and no dog fouling was found, marking a 100% reduction in these areas. In addition, six ‘Bag It, Bin It’ stencils were painted on Middle Street and Louise Street to reinforce the message.

At Wood Park Gardens, tenants had previously raised concerns about passersby walking across front gardens, leading to dogs fouling where there was no barrier between gardens and footpaths. Acting on this feedback, CGA’s Environmental Services Team planted hedges to separate the gardens from the footpaths. A tenant shared during the recount visit,

“The hedges have really helped with the dog fouling and I haven’t noticed any dog mess since they were planted.”

This joint effort highlights the difference we can when working together with tenants and our partners. It is a great example of how small changes can make a big difference in keeping our communities clean, safe and enjoyable for everyone.
