Support Aids for Your Home
If you or a member of your household are experiencing difficulties living in your home, it may be possible for Community Gateway to adapt your home to meet your needs.
Aids and adaptations are changes that can be made to your home to help you, or someone in your household live more safely, comfortably and independently. The service is available for eligible tenants who meet the criteria and are in need of that extra support.
There are two different types of adaptation, minor and major.
Minor adaptations
A minor adaptation involves relatively simple changes to your home that can make a big difference to your quality of life, or that of a household member. These adaptations generally have a value below £1,000 and are usually funded by CGA. These can include:
In some cases, you may need to provide medical evidence that you require these adaptations, we will let you know following your request if that is the case.
What you can expect from us
We will contact you within two working days from the date of your request and if necessary, arrange for a colleague to visit your home to assess the work required.
If the adaptations are approved, we will carry out the work within four weeks.

Alternatively, if you have a social worker or Occupational Therapist you can ask them to write to us about your needs and the problems you are having in your home. We will contact you within two working days of your request.
Major adaptations
Major adaptations involve more extensive works that cost over £1,000. These are usually funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) that is managed by your Local Authority or County Council. Examples of major adaptations include:
There is usually no charge to you for major adaptations, subject to meeting the criteria for the Disabled Facilities Grant.
What you can expect from us
You will be referred to an Occupational Therapist to assess your needs. Then, the Local Authority and CGA will check that you are eligible for the DFG grant and that your home is suitable for the alterations. We may also look to see if we have any other suitable properties available.
If approved, you will be included on a future programme of work to be carried out once funding becomes available. There is a high level of demand for this service which can lead to delays in the works being carried out once applications are approved. Likely timescales and the next steps will be discussed with you individually. If you are able to fund the works yourself it is possible the work could be carried out more quickly.
Major adaptations usually require a specialist contractor who we will appoint and manage on your behalf. You will have a direct point of contact at CGA, on hand throughout the works to ensure they are carried out to a high standard and that you are completely satisfied on completion.
How to request a minor adaptation
To apply for a major adaptation, we recommend that you either speak to your GP or contact your Local Authority (for Preston City Council, this is the Adaptations Team on 01772 906355).
