Celebrating 20 Years: Our First Community Project Brings Porter Street to Life

This year, we are celebrating Community Gateway’s 20th birthday by giving back to our communities through 20 community projects.

Our very first project focused on the Porter Street area, including Golbourne Street, Graham Street, and Herbert Street, following tenant feedback during the Shape Your Space event in Deepdale.

Tenants highlighted concerns including fly-tipping, littering, dog fouling, overgrown planters and parking issues. Bin stores were frequently misused for fly-tipping, communal grassed areas were being fouled and planters had become overgrown. Parking was also a challenge, with non-residents using land previously designated for tenant garages, creating hazards for wheelchair users.

On Wednesday 4th March, our community improvement day addressed these concerns. Teams from across Gateway joined tenants to:

• Plant and refresh planters - Ten planters were cleared in advance and tenants helped plant three beds. One bed will be maintained as a memorial for a tenant’s mother and several tenants expressed interest in adopting other beds to maintain themselves.
• Install awareness signs - Signs were put up in hotspots to discourage fly-tipping and dog fouling, while staff door-knocked to explain how to report fly-tipping and the benefits of recycling.  
• Litter pick - Eight bags of litter were collected and fly-tipping was removed. 

Since then, two areas on Porter Street have now been designated for permit holders only. This enforcement aims to target the parking issues, providing necessary parking for tenants in the area. In the future, we will also be installing a dog foul bin. 

This first project is just the beginning of our 20th birthday celebrations, showing what can be achieved when we come together to improve neighbourhoods.
