Gas servicing
By law, the CGA must check gas appliances in every tenant's home at least once a year. This is important, because faulty equipment can leak a dangerous gas called carbon monoxide. (Carbon monoxide has no smell and no colour - but if breathed in, it can kill.)
The CGA will arrange for every tenant's gas pipework and heating systems to be serviced each year. This work must only be done by a CORGI registered engineer. Tenants must never carry out any work on gas systems themselves.
Tenants are expected to let the engineer into their homes to carry out this important work. Any tenant who doesn't let an engineer in, may face legal action so that the CGA can inspect their home.
Any tenant who notices a smell of gas should phone the free Transco emergency service from a telephone outside their home. They should also:
Put out any cigarettes
Avoid using any naked flames
Avoid using electrical switches (as sparks can ignite the gas)
Turn off gas appliances at their own valves
Turn off the main gas tap at the meter
Open doors and windows to let the gas escape.
When the CGA receives a report of gas fumes or smells, it will ask Transco to attend the tenant's home within one hour to disconnect any faulty appliance.
Any other queries about gas and gas servicing can be reported to the CGA by
